South African Concert at LHS

Lorraine Klaasen From South Africa

Lorraine Klaasen is one of few South African artists who have preserved the classic sound of Township Music, which continues to be the most distinctive sound to come out of South Africa.
Born and raised in Soweto, Lorraine has electrified audiences worldwide with her dynamic stage presence and showmanship.
A 2013 JUNO winner for World Music Album of the Year, Lorraine is the daughter of legendary South African jazz singer Thandie Klaasen. She was influenced by South Africa’s music giants of the 1950s and 1960s such as Miriam Makeba (a close friend of Lorraine and her mother), Dolly Rathebe, Dorothy Masuka, Sophie Mgcina, and Busi Mhlongo.

The guitarist taught us how to say hello in the Zulu language of South America! Ask your son/daughter to tell you!

Elizabeth Cady Stanton

We read the biography of Elizabeth Cady Stanton who was the champion for women's rights to vote!! She
didn't stop there! She was passionate about girls' sports, property and child custody rights for women,
coeducation, equal wages for women, reforming divorce laws and abolition.
It took 18 years afterher death for women to get to vote, but she got the ball rolling!!
We talked about how hard she worked for women to be able to vote and what a privilege it is!

Look Who VOTED!!!!!

We voted two times in class this week ... one vote was to determine which was best, Golden Oreos
or the plain Chocolate Oreos! It was a close race, which led to a great discussion on our civic responsibility to vote.
The 2nd vote they voted without knowing what they voted for and then
they learned what they were voting for to show them the necessity of informed voting.
And of course, we voted at school for either a popcorn party, movie or extra recess to truly show them
and make them comfortable with the whole process of voting.
They earned their extra recess today during this wonderful weather we are having!!!!
